A Nationally Acclaimed Performance Review
Super Lawyers®, a Thomson Reuters company, curates its directory of attorneys serving different United States regions and practicing in more than 70 legal areas each year.
Regardless of whether they have been selected for inclusion before, every single Super Lawyers® candidate is, annually, put through a rigorous review process to verify that they are up to the standards of the publication. Both Super Lawyers® and Rising Stars candidates undergo this litmus test, which is composed of the following:
- Nomination: A third party or the Super Lawyers® Research Team must nominate/identify a legal professional for consideration.
- Independent research: All candidates are evaluated by the Super Lawyers® research department on past settlements and verdicts, education and employment background, other accolades, representative clients, and 8 other categories deemed indicative of “peer recognition and professional achievement.”
- Peer evaluation: A Blue Ribbon Panel of top-rated Super Lawyers® candidates from the prior two steps evaluates other candidates in their areas of legal practice, ranking them on a scale of 1 to 5. This part of the process is also referred to as the “Blue Ribbon Review.”
- Final verification: Once all candidates are grouped according to firm size, only the highest-scoring attorneys are selected for inclusion. At this point, Super Lawyers® conducts a final review to ensure that each finalist is in good standing with their local licensing authority, that they have no criminal convictions, that they have not been formally disciplined, and that there are no other outstanding issues.
The only difference between Super Lawyers® and Rising Stars is that the former lists attorneys who have been in practice for more than 10 years or are considered to be mid- to late-career legal professionals, while the latter lists early career legal professionals (no older than 40 years of age or in practice for no more than a decade). Only 2.5% of all U.S. attorneys are recognized in Rising Stars, and no more than 5% are selected for inclusion in Super Lawyers®.
